Water is the elixir of life. So how come many of us don’t drink anywhere near enough of it?
Ask your friends how many glasses of water they drink each day, and it’s likely that they’ll say they get most of their water from food. Maybe you’re the same. Many of us are!
But because our body is composed mostly of water (our muscles are 90% water, while our blood is 83%), it means that we need to keep feeding it water each day. If we don’t, we’ll start to feel sluggish and icky.
While it’s totally possible to get a decent amount of water from food (cucumber is like 90% water or something crazy!), it’s much better to also drink at least 4-5 glasses of water each day, too.
But you know what comes with even more health benefits? Drinking pure water on an empty stomach. Here is why:
It Eliminates Toxins From Your Body
One of the reasons we sometimes wake up feeling a bit more rundown than usual is because our system is overflowing with toxins.
Toxins are basically nasty molecules that get into our body from various sources, including pollution. Once inside our body, they enter our bloodstream and leave us feeling tired and exhausted.
You’ve heard of brain fog, right? That’s caused by too many toxins in your system.
Drinking a glass of water straight away in the morning flushes these pesky toxins out of your system, leaving you feeling revitalised and fresh.
Water Cleans Your Colon
If you don’t get enough water, your colon may be left unclean.
But you already knew that, right?
You didn’t? Oh. Sounds disgusting, right?
As well as sounding disgusting, an unclean colon finds it difficult to absorb essential nutrients. So while you might be feeding your body the right things, if you’re not drinking enough water, you’re probably not reaping as many health benefits as you could be.
It’s Good For Your Skin
Without enough water, your skin just won’t look as great as it could do. For as much collagen as possible (which promotes skin elasticity), you need more H2O.
We all care about our skin. So it makes sense to add water to your morning routine.
Releases Wastes Built Up During Sleep
Sleep is important, because it is during sleep when your body repairs cells and cleans itself. It’s ace!
The problem is that it isn’t always the best at eliminating the mess (waste) afterwards. It needs YOUR help.
And you can easily help by drinking a glass of water in the morning, as this will nicely eliminate all the wastes that have built up in your body overnight. Yay!
It Can Help You Lose Weight
We’ve all got a friend (or a few friends!) who are trying to lose weight. Unfortunately, there are always one or two friends that insist on losing weight the hard way.
And because losing weight is SO hard, they give up.
The thing is, losing weight can be as easy as making a few small adjustments to your diet and lifestyle. And drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach in the morning is one of them.
Water helps you to lose weight by accelerating your metabolism so that it’s ready for the day ahead.
Water Boosts Your Appetite
Lots of people skip breakfast. Why? There are a few reasons. Commonly, a person might skip breakfast because they never have enough time, or they just don’t feel hungry in the morning.
Breakfast, though, is arguably the most important meal of the day. It sets the right tone, and loads you with all kinds of essential nutrients that build your energy right up.
To get hungrier and therefore ready for breakfast, drinking water first thing helps. Try it. Drink a glass before anything else, and you’ll soon notice your appetite growing.
Why is this? Well, because many of us get our water from food produce, your body is trained to think that receiving water means it’s receiving food. So it prepares itself by getting hungry!
It Can Prevent Headaches
Headaches are quite common, and they can be caused by a number of things. The excess build-up of toxins is one reason for a morning headache, as is dehydration. The good news is that water can easily remedy both these causes.
Drinking water as soon as you wake up in the morning can prevent dehydration, and it also releases toxins from your body (as mentioned earlier).
Water Gets Your Bowels Moving
Did you know that dehydration is the major cause of constipation? It sure is. Which means that drinking a glass of water in the morning can regulate bowel activity – which is aways a fantastic way to start the day!
Water Can Prevent Bad Breath
Bad breath – or halitosis as it’s also known – is an embarrassing problem that nobody wants to be afflicted with. And when we are afflicted with it, we’d rather not admit it.
In fact, we often lapse into denial.
“No, I can’t be the one with the bad breath. It must be the girl next to me.”
But when all the evidence points to YOU, it’s time to do something about it.
Chewing gum or drinking lots of coffee are just short term fixes. They alter the smell coming from your mouth, but they don’t actually eliminate bad breath.
Drinking pure water on an empty stomach in the morning, however, does. It can also reduce oral bacterial infections, and maybe even reduces the amount of time you have to spend at the dentist in the long run!
It Hydrates You
This one is an obvious benefit. Perhaps you’re rolling your eyes and saying “obviously! Tut.”
If it’s so obvious, though, why do many of us avoid a glass of water in the morning? Instead, we opt for a cup of coffee.
Coffee will not hydrate you in the same way that water will. Neither will energy drinks of soda.
Hydration in the morning with a glass of water is necessary because it refills your body with the right amount of H2O needed to keep your body functioning at optimal levels. Avoid water, and you’re probably not going to be at your best.
Stay happy and healthy!
